The Cage Match rules of debate:
- Define all terms
- Answer all questions
- Standardized arguments (prose optional)
Participating in a Cage Match Debate (CMD) is an intellectually challenging task. It involves developing a near mastery over a subject, presenting the case for it as simply and clearly as possible, and defending it against all attacks.
CMD is an excellent tool for discovering the truth. Long standing disputes have a high probability of being resolved. Bitter arguments can be exposed as mere quibbles over definitions. By entering a format where the truth is the only goal, debaters can put aside everything else and resolve their differences like rational adults.
The very act of preparing an argument in CM format can yield enormous benefit:
- Pre-CM format: Before, the argument is a jumbled mess of undefined terms and unfocused conclusions.
- Post-CM format: After, the argument is focused like a laser beam. The debater knows exactly what their position is, what their terms mean, and how it is logically deduced.
What if you don’t want to?
There are several options:
- You are indifferent to a certain debate; you are neither for nor against.
- You have no arguments; no premises or conclusions to standardize.
- You are afraid; you fear that your current ideology is rooted in falsehood, and that you will lose the debate.
But there is nothing to fear! Casting aside falsehoods and embracing truths is the essence of human rationality. The only way to become wise is by rooting out errors of logic and replacing them with gems of truth.
No one is born perfectly wise. Everyone must follow the path of wisdom: acknowledging truths and casting aside falsehoods. By producing superefficient debates, the CM method is the best way to become wise.
